Refrigerator in a vacation condo - should you leave it running ?

Can you answer charlie k’s question about Vacation Rentals?:

The guy in the store told my cousin to leave it running to avoid having the compressor seize. It costs money to leave it running and I said - well in Florida, we have a power failure nearly once a month during the summer and fall, so how much better would this be than leaving it off for 8 months ???

Vacation Rentals Feedback: time frame is everything. 8 months?

Clean it good and turn it off.

Vacation Rentals Feedback: No you should turn it off, but open it up before you leave, never leave it closed, it could grow mold.

Vacation Rentals Feedback: Ummm … refrigerators are made to be turned off. Just take out all the food first!

are you sure you weren’t talking to the power company?

Vacation Rentals Feedback: turn it off and leave the doors open as not to grow mold.

Vacation Rentals Feedback: I have never heard of this compressor freezing up thing. It sounds dubious to me. In eight months of wasting electicity you could probably buy a new fridge for the money you would save anyway.

Vacation Rentals Feedback: This is the first I’ve ever heard of leaving a refrigerator running if it’s not going to be used for a long period of time. I’ve frequently rented vacation homes and always found the fridge turned off with the door slightly ajar and that’s how I leave it when I depart.

Vacation Rentals Feedback: Turn it off….my goodness, they sit in the box and/or warehouses for unlimited amounts of time…it should certainly be ok to turn it off

Vacation Rentals Feedback: yes leave it running. Just turn the knob so the temperature is higher. A frig only cost 60$ a year with opening and closing the door. With the temp up and the door closed it will only cost you 20$ for 8 month

Vacation Rentals Feedback: YOu need to clean it and make sure you secure the door so it cant close or it will get extremely funky.
