How can you tell if a vacation rental owner is legitimate?

Answered By Editor

If the rental owner is offering their property independently, phone communication is important to answer any questions you may have and to get a feel for the expectations of the agreement. If any of the person's answers sound suspicious, beware! It very well could be a scam. Ask for a phone number of someone living close or in the same complex to make sure that the person is legitimate.

You may also want to ask for current pictures sent via mail or email and references of neighbors or folks who have rented the property before.

If the rental is taken care of through a reputable rental company, then chances are you will have nothing to worry about except finding the right place for your budget. Reputable rental companies usually have websites with updated pictures or brochures they can send to you through the mail, as well as helpful and friendly representatives you can talk to on the phone.

Lastly, if someone asks you to wire money upfront, it is most likely a scam.
