In a timeshare, you have a deeded ownership interest in the unit you are staying at, and sometimes are required to stay in the same unit at the same time of year every year. You have much more flexibility in a vacation rental, and can go wherever you want, whenever the owner of the unit has availability. However, "availability" is the operative word here.
