How can I be sure it is safe to rent a vacation home internationally?

Answered By Editor

A vacation home can be a wonderful choice for your accomodation in a foreign country provided you do your homework prior to your trip. A couple of points to ponder when it comes to vacation homes:

- Don't just look at an advertisement and decide on the vacation home. Most of the time, what you see is NOT what you get and the entire vacation becomes a disaster.

- Call and check with the home owners about the location, the facilities, the nearest hospital, emergency numbers, local stores, neighbours, etc. These will come in handy as you will feel completely lost when in a vacation home and having all these numbers in your pocket, will keep you mentally assured.

- Check out reviews for vacation homes. There are a lot of websites that allow people to write reviews about their place of stay. That should also give an idea about what you can expect and what you cannot expect from a particular vacation home.

The safest way would be to go through a known agency. You could use a travel agent that has dealt with renting homes or a agent local to the country and city where you are planning to stay. It may also help to ask for references of people who have rented from them before.
